For the first time in music history, Hip Hop has become mainstream and is therefore now considered to be popular music A.K.A Pop. This means that a lot of the music that you are listening to right now probably has bits & pieces of rap in it. The truth is the youth are the ones that dictate popular culture such as fashion and trends thus Hip Hop is now where it is because of young people.
How Rap Became Mainstream Music
When the 1980s & 90’s happened the West Coast Rap Sound became mainstream and the rap market went through the roof. The kids who listened to the typical Rap music such as Tha Dogg Pound & NWA were not the hardcore, street-side thugs. These were the ones who were in the punk scene and showed a bit of emotion. For the average person who was not into the hardcore scene, there was a certain appeal in listening to the softer rap music such as Tupac’s explicit music. Since this music was not around before, it was hard for those who were not fans of the “harder” music to make it past the “rap” genre on the radio. However, as people started to listen to the music it also created a way for the artists to express themselves and fans to connect with the music.

Why I Listen To Rap Music
As a young man, I think it’s important for me to be a part of a community that appreciates our culture and identity as black people. To be able to show and show solidarity with the people who came before us is essential. I’m a believer in keeping music as a musical language that we can all identify with and use in our everyday lives. The way I got into rap music was simply by liking what I liked. I grew up listening to Ice Cube, NWA, Beastie Boys, Notorious B.I.G. The list goes on & on. By spending time in my room with my turntable or by going to a club, I became exposed to a lot of different styles of music and that was one of the reasons I became a music lover. The thing that makes rap music great is its attitude.
